Description: This item is Dorothea V. Kaschube's typescript manuscript published in 1978 by the University of Chicago Press based on Crow texts elicited in 1953-1954 from Henrietta Pretty On Top, a native Crow speaker from Lodgegrass, Montana, "who at that time was a young woman, a mother, in her early twenties." Kaschube was a graduate assistant for a Field Methods and Techniques course conducted by Carl F. Voegelin and Henry Lee Smith in Bloomington, Indiana. She spent considerable time with Pretty On Top, one of the language consultants for the course, and includes both linguistic materials and ethnographic observations in this manuscript. The audio tapes of the texts are deposited in the Language Archives of the World at Indiana University.

Description: Two items relating to the Cuicatec (Cuicateco) language of Oaxaca, Mexico have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Both are in Subcollection I. There is a copy of Joan Elisabeth Goetz's "A Morphological Analysis of Cuicateco Words" (1954) in Series IV. Works by Others; and there is an undated "Cuicateco" folder in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A: Language Notes. The latter folder contains what appears to be a typed draft of introductory material for Goetz's "Translation from FL Cuicateco to T1 English," based on an animal story narrated by indigenous speaker Teofilio Mariscal from the village of Concepcion Papalo, and following Voegelin's Multiple Stage Translation method. There are also two typed chapters (whether of Goetz's manuscript or another is unclear) describing an expedition led by Marjorie Davis and Margaret Walker to survey the Cuicateco villages, including a list of villages and language consultants in each, a description of the district and its history (with maps), and linguistic material evidently prepared by Davis and Walker.

Description: Four items relating to Dakota materials at the American Philosophical Society. Two 1797 items relate to the work of S. F. Hutchinson. In one, Hutchinson writes to Charles Willson Peale, describing the Calumet dance (Wakon-Mantah) of Naudowessie beyond Lake Pepin and including the score, the notation of music secured from an Indian "priest," and his own comments on the effect of music. In the other, signed by George Turner and Robert Patterson, an APS committee rejects Hutchinson's paper on Indian music as an imposition on the Society. [See also Early Proceedings (1885): 263-264.] The third letter is from Peter S. du Ponceau to Johann S. Vater regarding vocabularies of eight Indian languages, including Shoshoni, Upsaroke, Kenzes, comparative Sioux, etc.. The fourth and final item is a letter from Michael Melody to Murphy D. Smith regarding Rev. Luke Walker, a full-blooded Santee Dakota; J. R. Walker, M.D.; Dr. Walker's "The Sun Dance and Other Ceremonies of the Oglala Division of the Teton Dakota" (Anthropological Papers of the American Museum of Natural History); and the possibility that Dr. Walker is the source of Deloria's "Legends of the Oglala Sioux."

Description: The heart of the Fanggui Li Collection is comprised of ten notebooks kept by the linguist Fanggui (Fang-Kuei) Li relating to his research on the Denesuline "Chipewyan" language in 1928. Recorded in the field, these texts consist of phonetic transcriptions of stories elicited from François Mandeville in Denesuline, and, in one instance, Baptiste Ferrier) in July 1928, with interlinear English translations. The topics of these stories include myths, folklore, and tribal history as well as activities like fishing, tanning a moose hide, or making a canoe. The balance of the collection consists of an extensive slipfile for Denesuline language, and two audio cassettes of oral history interviews conducted by Laurence C. Thompson and M. Terry Thompson in 1982, concerning Li's memories of Edward Sapir and other colleagues in linguistics. Interview topics include Li's early education, experience at the University of Chicago, Leonard Bloomfield, Edward Sapir's influence on his course of study, Li's fieldwork on the Mattole language in Northern California in the late 1920s, discrimination against Chinese in that region at that time, Li's work with Sapir on the Hupa reservation, and various aspects of linguistic methodology of the times, including recording with wax cylinders. See the finding aid for more information, including more details on the contents of each notebook and the two audio cassettes, and for related material.
