Description: The Quileute collection in the ACLS collection consists of a large body of materials located primarily in the "Quileute" section of the finding aid. These materials were recorded primarily by Albert Reagan, Leo Frachtenberg, and Manuel Andrade. Reagan was an Indian agent and teacher at the Quileute Day School. His materials (item W3a.10, "Quileute ethnology"), dated from 1908-1913, primarily include drawing made by students at the Quileute Day School. These images include pencil and ink sketches, color crayon drawings, watercolors, and gelatin silver prints of utensils, canoes, drums, rattles, toys, arrows, masks, totems, and decorative patterns. Frachtenberg's materials date from roughly 1915 to 1922 and contain detailed ethnographic and linguistic information, split up into several different listed items. Andrade's work followed shortly after Frachtenberg and concerns primarily linguistic information and additional stories. Arthur Howeattle is a prominent Quileute consultant for some of these items. Some additional materials comparing the Quileute and Chemakum languages can be found in the "Chimakum" section of the finding aid (items W3b.1, W3b.2, and W3b.4), as well as comparisons of Quileute and Nuu-chah-nulth in the "Nootka" section of the finding aid (item W2a.13).

Twelve chapters give brief history, biographies, and locations; describe festivals and dances in detail; analyze native songs (scores); describe a Chippewa Methodist camp meeting and hymns, with analysis of hymn texts and tunes. Also, presnnts Ottawa superstitions (bear walking, medicines, herbs), 42 Ottawa myths (see also #2642), material on natural-history usage. Attempts to reconstruct function of ritual, with historical references.

Description: Seneca materials make up the majority of the Fenton papers and can be found throughout all sections of the collection. Series I contains correspondence with numerous people on Seneca matters. Noteworthy Seneca correspondents include Simeon Gibson, Clara Redeye, Sherman Redeye, and other individuals such as those listed above. The largest body of material is in Series V, which includes Fenton's notebooks and other documentation from field work at Allegany, Cattaraugus, Tonawanda, and Grand River, beginning in the 1930s through late in his career. This section also includes extensive card files on "Materia Medica" or ethnobotanical information, and Seneca place names. Series VI consists of over 1000 photographs, the majority of which are from Seneca communities in the 1930s-1950s. Series VII contains one audio recording of Seneca songs. Series VIII includes additional field notes and other materials derived mainly from his 1930s fieldwork. Significant portions of these materials may be restricted due to cultural sensitivity, as Fenton's materials frequently pertain to areas of sacred traditional knowledge.

Description: A compilation LP record of Native American musical and dance recordings made by Gertrude Prokosch Kurath at numerous locations from 1952 to 1954, published in 1956. Also includes a 20-page booklet with extensive background information, biographical info on the performers, explanations of songs, musical analysis, and sheet music. All of the Onondaga and all but one of the Cayuga recordings in the collection are restricted due to cultural sensivity concerns.

Description: The Syilx (Okanagon) materials in the APS collection consists mainly of items in the "Okanagan" section of the finding aid. Boas' "Okanagan materials" (item S1d.1) include vocabulary and texts with interlinear translation, and some corresponding Kalispel forms. Teit's "Vocabulary in Okanagon and related dialects" (item S1d.2) includes forms from Nkaus, Sanpoil, Colville, and Lake dialects, with some parallel forms in Kalispel and Columbia. Rachel Commons' field notes (item S1d.4) include word lists, ethnographic notes (including a map), and some linguistic text. In the "Salish" section of the finding aid, Teit's "Songs from the Salish area" (item S.6) include notes on 80 songs (some of which are Syilx) recorded for and sent to the National Museum of Canada (now the Canadian Museum of History). In this same section, Teit's "Field notes on Thompson and neighboring Salish languages" (item S1b.7) consists of numerous notebooks, which partially include some ethnographic notes on Syilx matters.

Description: The Takelma material in the ACLS consist primarily of materials found in the "Takelma" section of the finding aid, item Pn1.1. The bulk of this material is that recorded by Edward Sapir in 1903-1904, consisting of 5 field notebooks with texts with English translations and medicine formulas (published in 1909) as well as paradigms and other grammatical notes. This material also contains sheet music with transcriptions of four Takelma songs and one each for Chasta Costa, Shasta, and Chinook Jargon. Remaining leaves are vocabulary notes made by H. H. St. Clair. In the "Penutian" section, there are also two sets of "Coos-Takelma-Penutian comparisons" (item P1.2 and P1.3).

Items include 8 notebooks of field notes (1912-1913), containing a list of specimens purchased, texts, and notes on the language, ethnology, and archaeology, etc.; Mason's Preliminary Report as Fellow to the Escuela Internacional de Etnologia y Arqueologia Americanas (1912-1913), on continued investigations in linguistics, religion, ethnology, and mythology of the Tepecanos and in the archaeology of their region; Mason's Tepecano linguistic file, comprised of about 1000 cards with Tepecano words and sentences, with Spanish translations for most and English translations for some; Mason's "A Sketch of Tepecano Religion," which includes some comparison with religious beliefs of Huichols and Coras; a Tepecano Rain Festival Song, musical score with Tepecano lyrics; 6 pages of Tepecano verbal roots with English glosses; and Mason's miscellaneous notes on Tepecano regarding ethnology, linguistics, religion, Piman [Akimel O'odham] comparisons, etc., and including prayers with interlinear English translation (with note "work done for Boas").

Description: The Tewa materials in the ACLS collection consist of two items in the "Tewa" section of the finding aid. One is a brief Tewa word list from 1915 (item T1a.1), recorded by Edward Sapir. The other is Kurath's "Cochiti and San Juan Pueblo songs" (item Ke1.10), which consists of words, music, paraphrase of text, lists of ceremonial terms, and includes a list of contents of audio collection "Tewa Recordings, Ohkay Owingeh" (Mss.Rec.25), listed separately in this guide. Also includes a phonologic chart for Cochiti Keresan and Tewa-Tanoan. Some of this material may be culturally sensitive and reproduction restricted.
