Description: Between around 1948 and 1950, Amelia Susman did fieldwork in Brienz, Switzerland, documenting the local variety of Highest Allemanic German as well as the social and economic organization of the village and surrounding areas. This is all contained within Series I. Of particular note are a reel-to-reel tape and some associated transcriptions, a set of 13 field notebooks, a lexical file, topically-arranged ethnographic notes, some correspondence with consultants (scattered throughout), and preparatory materials for several publications.

Description: William Bright's most significant Cahuilla materials consist of audio recordings of Cahuilla songs and wordlists made between the 1950s and 1980s. Katherine Siva Saubel is identified as a speaker on some, while others contain singing from an unidentified male. These can be found in Series 6 and the Digital Library. In addition are Bright's own interlinear glosses of Cahuilla songs and notes on J. P. Harrington's Cahuilla materials (Series 4), a lexical slip file comparing several Takic languages (Series 5), correspondence (Series 1) and copies of several small publications on Cahuilla language and culture, including a lexicon by Saubel (Series 2).

Materials attributed to Mason include a bibliography composed of about 300 cards primarily on South American languages, including many entries not in the Handbook of South American Indians; a notebook of observations on the distribution, relationships, etc., of South American languages; a file with correspondence, bibliography, draft of introduction, etc., relating to his contribution to the Handbook of South American Indians; a 166-page essay on the preconquest history and culture of the Andean region (mostly Peru) through the medium of artifacts preserved in the University Museum (University of Pennsylvania); two copies of Mason's "Andean Civilization," including bibliography, for the Encyclopedia Britannica (1960); two copies of the preface to the Spanish edition of "Ancient Civilizations of Peru," with a memorandum from Alfred Kidder II to Mason regarding recent developments in Central Andean archaeology; an incomplete essay titled "Status and problems of research in the Native Languages of South America," primarily concerned with historical linguistics and genetic relationship; and a file of notes on genetic relationships, subgrouping, etc., from published sources or giving his own impressions: Kamakan, Choroti, Ashluslay Kaduveo, Mataco; Malali, Mashakal, Ge, Vejoz, Coropo, Motilon, Towothl, Kaingang, Subtiaba, Hokan, Coroado, etc.. Cherokee materials in the Crawford Papers consist of 3 folders located in Series IV-D, Research Notes & Notebooks--Other. "Cherokee--Notebook" contains a field notebook of linguistic materials dated to winter 1972-1973. Cherokee language consultants mentioned include Laura King, Mrs. Schweder, Ann Squirrel, and Gil Jackson. University of Georgia graduate students mentioned include Duane King, V. Richard Persico, and Jared Harper. "Cherokee Phonology" contains a draft, both typed and handwritten, of Duane H. King's manuscript of the same name, focusing on the Qualla dialect and based on research undertaken as part of Crawford's Southeast Indian Languages Project with support from the National Science Foundation. Qualla-speaking Cherokee consultants were Annie Jesson and Laura Hill. There are also three pages of Crawford's comments on the draft and five slips of errata. "Cherokee, NC Trip" contains 5 pages of notes relating to a trip Crawford apparently took with Duane King May 15-May 17, 1972, and includes one page of directions with a sketched map, one page of expense accounts, and three pages of linguistic notes from Annie A. Jesson.

Description: Daythal Kendall's Chinookan languages file is entirely works collected from others, most notably Dell Hymes, Samuel Johnson and Marie-Lucie Tarpent, the latter of which includes a paper with over 200 comparisons between Chinookan and Tsimshian languages.
