Description: Count Paolo Andreani was an aeronaut, physicist, naturalist, and traveler. This is a translation of his travel diaries from originals owned by Count Antonio Sormani Verri, of Milan. Includes Frammenti de Diario, a fragment of a diary kept on a trip to Britain, circa 1783-1784; Viaggio da Milano a Parigi, journal of a voyage from Milan to Paris, 1784; Viaggi di un gentiluomo milanese, Giornale, typed transcriptions of the travels of a gentleman from Milan, containing notes on the Iroquois [Haudenosaunee] Indians, 1790; Giornale de Filadelfia a Quebec, journal from Philadelphia to Quebec, 1791; and, journal of a trip through New York state (including visits to Albany, the reservations of the Haudenosaunee, Saratoga, and the Shaker community at New Lebanon), 1790. Of particular importance are his comments on the Haudenosaunee, from Albany to the Haudenosaunee, pages 32-85, especially pages 45-85, which is copied in a typed transcript by Count Antonio Sormani Verri, 15 pages. Discusses the Oneida: dress, physical type, government, religion; discusses Tuscarora and Onondaga; comments on language of Mohawks. Vocabularies, sentences of Onondaga, Oneida, and Seneca.

Description: Part of a collection comprised of religious and linguistic materials in various Native American languages. Many were written by Jesuit missionaries of New France. These particular items include an unattributed 1847 letter, in French, on the etymology of some Personal names; a word list obtained at Sault St. Louis, with a note on provenance, attributed to de Lorimier, possibly the French-Haudenosaunee interpreter and agent Jean-Baptiste de Lorimier or one of his relations; and the 1755 "Livre des prieres, cantiques, et himnes en langue hyroquois telles qu'on se sont maintenant a la Mission du Lac des Deux Montagnes," containing various notes added to an original manuscript on plain chant, carols, articles preliminary to the peace of Versailles in 1783, description of a serpent killed at Chateau Ste. Anne, recipes, remedies, etc. Originals in Laval University, Seminaire de Quebec.

Description: There are some materials relating to Iroquoian languages in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. This entry is intended as a catch-all for materials labeled as "Iroquois" or "Iroquoian." Researchers should also view the entries for specific Iroquoian languages and culture groups (i.e., Oneida, Seneca, Cherokee). Iroquoian materials are located in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II. In Subcollection I, there is relevant correspondence with Floyd Lounsbury (regarding Oneida, Seneca, and Cherokee work) and Herman B Wells (to William Fenton regarding sending Voegelin to the Iroquois Conference accompanied by slips of notes including potential language consultants including Leroy Cooper, Sherman and Clara Red Eye, Jesse Cornplanter, and Will Bomberry) in Series I. Correspondence; and one folder each of Iroquois (an exam bluebook containing notes on Iroquois history, documentary sources, and some words) and Siouan-Iroquois material (a word list) in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A: Language Notes. In Subcollection II, there are Ojibwe stories about the Iroquois people (Haudenosaunee) titled "Iroquois War near Spanish River," "War with the Iroquois," and "Another Iroquois attack repulsed" in Ojibwe Texts IV, an arrangement of texts by Leonard Bloomfield located in Series II.
