Description: Several items relating to the Penutian language family have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Of particular interest is Subseries VI. Penutian, including Mayan and Zoque, of Subcollection II, Series II. Research Notes. The contents of this subseries includes folders of materials under the following headings: Chinookan-Chinook, Wishram, Kathlamet; Klamath-Modoc; Maidu; Maya (Tzeltal); Miwok; Penutian; Sahaptin; Takelma; Tsimshian; Yokuts; and Zuni. There are also Penutian materials in Subcollection II, Series IV. Works by Others. These include Leonard Bloomfield's "Penutian" sketch; Giuseppe Francescato's masters thesis, "A Structural Comparison of the Californian Penutian" (1952); and Morris Swadesh's "Problems of Long-Range Comparison in Penutian." Description: The C. F. Voegelin Papers contain notes, notebooks, stories, photographs, and other linguistic and ethnographic materials relating to Potawatomi (Pottowatomi) language and culture. These are located in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II of the Voegelin Papers. Materials in Subcollection I include relevant correspondence with Eli Lilly (regarding the discovery of inscribed stones and their possible meaning; see photographs referenced below) in Series I. Correspondence; a folder of Ojibwa [Ojibwe] and Pottowatomi [Potawatomi] comparative vocabularies in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A: Language Notes; a folder of three undated "Pottowatomi" notebooks containing texts (with some English translation) and mentioning consultants Smallman Isaac, William George, and William Soney in Series VI. Notebooks; and two images of stones inscribed with Potawatomi petroglyphs, from Elkhart, Indiana, in Series VII. Photographs. These images have been digitized and are available through the APS's Digital Library. In Subcollection II, there are Potawatomi stories in the Eastern Woodland category in Series III. Dale Kinkade (regarding a comparative work on color and anatomical terms in Salish, Navajo, and English), Stanley Newman (mentioning his recent work on Bella Coola and comparative Salish), and Jay Ellis Ransom (his work on Salish languages, Duwamish, Aleut, Flathead) in Series I. Correspondence. Series II. Research Notes, Subseries VIII. Undetermined Phylum Affiliation. These materials are in folders labeled as follows: "Mosan" [Voegelin originally labeled this folder "Mosan = Salish + Wakashan + Chimakuan = Quileute"]; "Salish"; "Salish: Bella Coola (Nuxalk), Coeur d'Alene"; "Salish: Duwamish" [these materials are attributed to Jay Ellis Ransom and include texts in Salish and English, with linguistic analysis, recorded from Mrs. Julia Siddle on the Muckleshoot Reservation in 1936]; and "Salish problem." This last folder contains correspondence compiled by Voegelin revolving around the "Salish Problem," including letters from Morris Swadesh (on analysis of Salish material by Boas and James Teit in the ACLS Collection, Mss.497.3.B63c), June Collins, Melville Jacobs. This folder also includes draft of a paper on Salish languages based upon the discussion in these letters. The final Salish item is located in Series IV.
