Description: The Chinanteco material in the ACLS collections are primarily found in the "Chinanteco" section of the finding aid. Two items are stories (Ch.1 and Ch.2, "El perrito de Teotitlan" and "Cuento del pescador", which identifies Yolox and Yetla varieties) recorded by Jaime de Angulo, with Spanish and English translation. Another item (Ch.3) is a 64-word Spanish-Chinantec vocabulary recorded by Norman McQuown. Two items in the "Mexico" section of the finding aid (items AM3 "Phonemic systems of various Indian languages of Mexico" and AM5 "Comparative vocabularies of various Indian languages of Mexico") contain comparative vocabularies that include Chinantec, as do two items in the "Mixtec" section (items MiM.1 "Mixtec tones and morphological comments" and MiM.2 "Mixtec and Chinantec lexicon", varieties of Mixtec unidentified), and "Zapotecan texts" (item Z.3) in the "Zapotec" section. The identification of varieties of Chinantec in most of the materials is undetermined.

Description: Materials relating to Radin's study of Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) history, culture, and language. Some items are written in Ho-Chunk, with and without English translations. This large collection includes 34 original field notebooks; numerous short and long stories (Hare cycle, Aleck Linetree [probably Alec Lone Tree], the origin of the Buffalo clan, the story of the holy one, the boy who wished to be immortal, etc.); several longer pieces, such as a typed manuscript titled "The legend of Mother-of-all-the-Earth," speeches of Charlie Houghton, multiple versions of "How Blowsnake joined the medicine dance," "Origin myth of the medicine dance," etc.; several published secondary sources; over 3,000 slips for an English-Winnebago [i.e. Ho-Chunk] dictionary and other items relating to Ho-Chunk phonetics, lexicon, linguistics, etc.; several phonetic texts, some with English translation; and a variety of other items with ethnographic, historical, and linguistic data pertaining to ceremonies, tales, clans, medicine, origins, dance, burial, peyote, names, and sweat-baths. Description: The Mixtec materials in the ACLS collection consist mainly of three items in the "Mixtec" section of the finding aid. Radin's "Mixtec and Chinantec lexicon" (item MiM.2) is based on his own fieldwork and other published work by Belmar. See separate guide entries for the Paul Radin Papers (Mss.497.3.R114), which contain his original fieldwork. There is also an analysis of Mixtec tones and those of other neighboring language families by Jaime de Angulo (item MiM.1), and a Spanish-Mixtec vocabulary assembled by McQuown and Swadesh (item MiM.3). In the “Mexico” section of the finding aid, see “Comparative vocabularies of various Indian languages of Mexico” (item AM5), which includes Mixtec vocabulary, and McQuown's “Phonemic systems of various Indian languages of Mexico” (item AM3), which includes Mixtec information. In the “Zapotec” section of the finding aid, see de Angulo's “Estudio gramatical de las lenguas de la familia zapoteca” (item Z.1), which includes Mixtec information and ten ink sketches of maps showing linguistic groups, and de Angulo's “Zapotecan texts” (item Z.3) which includes Mixtec texts. Description: The Patwin materials in the ACLS collection consist of 4 items in the "Patwin" section of the finding aid. Jaime de Angulo's "The Patwin language" (item P4b.1-4) consists of analyses phonology and morphology; semasiology (semantically arranged vocabularies), conversation, and autobiography, all relating to the Colusa dialect. Three items by Radin include a Patwin-English dictionary (item P4b.5), a set of ethnographic and folkloristic stories (item P4b.6-7), and a sketch of Patwin grammar (item P4b.8).

Description: The Patwin materials in the Harvey Pitkin Papers include notebooks, notes, vocabularies, slip files, texts, manuscripts and tracings by A.M. Halpern, Paul Radin, A.L. Kroeber, T.T. Waterman, Donald Ultan, and Howard Wilson, along with pencil sketches by Patwin people in Subcollection I, Series I, Series I-A. There are two dictionaries, by Paul Radin and Donald Ultan in Subcollection I, Series I, Series I-B. Series I-C contains linguistic materials collected by Jaime de Angulo, Kroeber, and Waterman. Series I-D contains Pitkin's work with using a krmograph to create phonetic tracings. Subcollection I, Series II-A includes linguistic work done by Elizabeth Bright, Waterman. Subseries 4-C in Subcollection II includes fieldwork done by Pitkin comparing Patin to Wintu and Nomlaki as well as FIeld notes by Morris Swadesh, nineteen unpublished Vocabularies collected by Pitkin, Jaime de Angulo, Mary Haas, Sally McLendon, Mary Bright, Donald Ultan, and Radin. Subseries 5 contains an index to Radin's work on Patwin as well as Pitkin's work on Proto-Wintu and William Bright's worker wtih the speaker Minnie Bill.

Description: The Wintu materials in the Harvey Pitkin Papers are extensive. Subcollection I, Series I, contains notes, notebooks, vocabularies, slip files, texts, manuscripts and phonetic tracings by Jeremiah Curtin in the late 19th century, Roland Dixon, and A.M. Halpern. Series I-B contains Pitkin's grammar slip files and vocabularies collected by Curtin. Series I-C includes Jaime de Angulo's manuscript on the Patwin language, S.A. Barrett's transcriptions and translations of speech and song recordings, Radin's "Grammatical Sketch" and Waterman's notes on Patwin phonetics. Series II-A is rich in materials collected by A.L. Krober. In Subcollection II, Pitkin's field notes are located in Series 2, Subseries 1. Subseries 2 includes Pitkin's extensive notes on his Wintu dictionary, grammar, texts, stories, and music. The manuscript of the dictionary is located in Subseries 3. There is an unpublished 416 page manuscript of stories written in both English and Wintu, songs, and transcriptions in Subseries 4. This section also includes copies of all the extant linguistic material with works by noted linguists such as Curtin, Albert Gatschet, Radin, Halpern, Morris Swadesh, Victor Golla, and J.P. Harrington. Series 6 is comprised of card file slips with comparative analyses by Pitkin of the four languages of the Wintun family.

Description: The Wintun materials in the Harvey Pitkin Papers include a wealth of material collected by Pitkin from other scholars as well as his own linguistic work. The work of Paul Radin, A.L. Kroeber, Jeremiah Curtin, and T.T. Waterman can be found in Subcollection I, Series I and Series II. In Subcollection II, Pitkin's field notes of stories, songs, and myths are typed but were never published. Subseries 4-B and 4-C, "Source Texts," contains creation myths collected by Curtin, works by Kroeber, Albert Gatschet, and J.P. Harrington, Vocabularies collected by Morris Swadish, C. Hart Merriam, Arroyo de la Guesta (1821). Subseries 5 includes Pitkin's work on comparative Wintun Vocabularies and Proto-Wintun as well as Kenneth Whistler's work on Proto-Wintun. Series 6 has a large number of Wintun word slips.
