Description: Three items relating to Apache languages have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. All are in Subcollection II. They include Apache material in a folder labeled "Athabascan (Chipewyan)" as well as a separate "Apachean" folder in Series II. Research Notes, Subseries II. Na-Dene. The "Apachean" folder contains a typescript version of "The Word" by Gladys Reichard (with a note from Reichard), a draft typescript with annotation of "The Apachean Verb, Part I: Verb Structure and Pronomial Prefixes," by Harry Hoijer, and Voegelin's notes on Hoijer's articles on Apachean. Finally, there is a Chiricahua Apache story ("Child-of-the-Water Kills Four Monsters") as well as a Taos story about an Apache youth ("An Apache Boy Takes a Redhead Scalp") in the Southwestern Indian Tales section of Series III. Works by Voegelin, Subseries II: American Indian Tales for Children. Apache languages (Chiricahua, Jicarilla, Mescalero, and Jano) are also represented on Harry Tschopik's map of "Indian Languages in New Mexico, A.D. 1600" (1938) in Subseries V: American Indian Languages. Description: Items relating to the study of Dene languages, including a letter from Sapir to Hoijer regarding comparative Athapascan linguistics and two items composed of Hoijer's notes and writings on the subject. One is his 27-page "Comparative Athapascan Affixes," including charts of comparative data taken from 33 Athapascan languages and dialects (with English glosses). The other consists of about 300 handwritten slips on Comparative Athapascan with comparative lexical data described as Sarsi, Chipewyan, and Navajo, alphabetically arranged, according to the English gloss.

Description: Two items relating to the Denesuline language have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. One is in Subcollection I, Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-C: Other, and consists of notes in both English and French on the Dene alphabet and syllabary in a folder labeled "Inscribed Stone and Syllabary Material. The other is in Subcollection II, Series II. Research Notes, Subseries II. Na-Dene, and consists of a folder labeled "Athabascan (Chipewyan)." Its contents primarily concern Denesuline ("Chipewyan,") with briefer mentions of Apachean, Navajo, Hupa, Okanagan, Carrier, Chilcotin, Sekani, Dane-zaa ("Beaver,") and Tsuut'ina ("Sarcee"). It also includes correspondence with Harry Hoijer, 1950.

Description: Galice word and phrase list from a recording made with Galice speaker Hoxie Simmons at Siletz Reservation in 1956. (Original recording housed at the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages.) Handwritten on looseleaf, listing lexical items in phonemic transcription, with English glosses, e.g., dalbai. Lexicon includes nouns, pronouns, prepositions, adverbs, adjectives, as well as inflected forms of nouns ('my wife, your wife, his wife') and phrases (e.g., 'I shall see it', 'what are you doing?'). According to Kendall, nouns and verbs with person markers, but no complete paradigms. In "Series I: Correspondence," also see letter from Dorothy Hoijer to Whitfield Bell for brief info on the recording.
