Description: The Heiltsuk materials in the ACLS collection are located in the "Bella Bella" section of the finding aid, which contains a full listing. The majority of the materials were recorded or assembled by Franz Boas and George Hunt in the 1920s and consist predominantly of texts with interlinear translations (some in English only), linguistic notes, and lexical files. The item "Bella Bella notes" (item 4) by Herman Haeberlin contains color drawings of numerous Heiltsuk masks with accompanying commentary in English.

Description: The Ho-Chunk materials in the ACLS collection consists primarily of three items in the "Winnebago (Ho-Chunk)" section of the finding aid. The bulk of the material is Amelia Susman's 11 field notebooks (item X5.2), which contains texts with interlinear translation, Vocabularies, ethnographical and linguistic notes, and some songs. Two additional items also by Susman are extended analyses based upon field work with Sam Blowsnake and his unnamed wife: "The accentual system of Winnebago" (item X5.1) and "The Winnebago syllabary" (item X5.3). In the "Chiwere (Iowa)" section of the finding aid, Gordon Marsh's "Materials for a study of the Iowa Indian language" (item X4a.2) include some Ho-Chunk grammatical notes, and Ho-Chunk cognates with Chiwere. Lastly, in the "Dakota" section, Franz Boas' "Miscellaneous Dakota notes" (item X8a.3) includes a Dakota-Ho-Chunk comparative word list.

Description: The Hopi materials in the ACLS collection consist of materials primarily in the "Hopi" section of the finding aid. The earliest item is a brief word list recorded in 1915 by Edward Sapir (item U3a.4). The remaining items in this section are all by Benjamin Lee Whorf, including an initial linguistic report sent to Sapir, a grammatical sketch, an interlinear text on marriage customs, and a brief discussion of verb classes. In the "Bella Bella (Heiltsuk)" section of the finding aid, Boas' "Bella Bella suffix list" (item W1b.4) includes Hopi ethnographic materials on ceremony and religion written on the reverse side of sheets.

Description: The Hopi materials in the Elsie Clews Parsons papers consist of a large amount of material found in several different section of the collection. In Subcollection I, Series II, "Notes, manuscripts, etc.", item 18 includes the notebooks of Alexander Stephen from 1885-1892; item 51 includes a significant number of photographs from Hopi communities from the period of 1918-1926; and items 46 and 61 also contain briefer manuscript materials relating to Hopi ceremonies. In Subcollection II, Series I, "Professional Correspondence", a number of Correspondences pertain to Hopi matters, particularly Parsons' correspondence with Franz Boas, Ruth Bunzel, Frederick Dellenbaugh, C. Daryll Forde, Robert H. Lowie, Leslie White, and Benjamin Whorf. In Subcollection II, Series III, "Lectures and Manuscripts", there are proofs and drafts related to Parsons' publication of Alexander Stephen's "Hopi Journal." In Subcollection II, Series IV, "Research Notes" there is a large number of Parsons' field notebooks from multiple visits to different Hopi communities. Some portion of this material may be restricted due to cultural sensitivity or privacy concerns.

Description: This item is a Xerox copy of "Indian Myths and Legends from the North Pacific Coast of America," collected by Franz Boas, and translated from the original German into English by Dietrich Bertz. The material was originally published in a volume titled Indianische Sagen von der Nord-Pacifischen Küste Amerikas (Berlin, 1895), which compiled Boas's earliest research in British Columbia, including 250 First Nations myths and legends (translated from what are now recognized as at least a dozen different indigenous languages) which had previously appeared in German periodicals between 1891 and 1895. The final chapter contains Boas's structural analysis of the stories. Bertz translated the text for the British Columbia Indian Language Project in 1977. This version also has a short introduction by Claude Lévi-Strauss.

Description: The Inuit materials in the ACLS collection consist of several items in the "Eskimo" section of the finding aid. The core materials are Boas' fieldwork materials from Baffinland in 1883, his first fieldwork trip. "Eskimo ethnographic notes from Baffinland" (item 26) includes vocabulary, texts, and ethnographic notes. "Eskimo texts" (item E1a.1) includes several text written in syllabic script, and includes other texts as well, some with interlinear translations, and additional vocabulary lists. This material comes from Hamilton Inlet (Labrador), Hudson Bay, and Cumberland Sound. "Eskimo interlinear texts" (item E1a.2) includes brief additional texts. Boas' "Eskimo lexicon" (item E1a.3) consists of an extensive German-Inuit vocabulary file of over 2900 slips. Boas' "Eskimo Songs" (item E1a.4) consists of song texts with translations. Lastly, "Eskimo folklore" (item 32) consists of materials on stories, customs, and cooking and building methods, sent to Boas by George Comer, largely from the Southampton Island and Repulse Bay region. Description: The K'ómoks materials in the ACLS collection consist of several items relating to the Island Comox dialect, located in multiple sections of the finding aid. The primary material is in the "Comox" section of the finding aid, where there are two items recorded by Franz Boas. From 1890, there is "Comox-Satlolk materials" (item S2j.2) in German and English with Comox vocabulary and text with interlinear German translation, along with Satlolk-English vocabulary. "Comox and Pentlatch texts" (item S2j.1) contains texts with interlinear translations, most typed up from earlier fieldwork. In the "Pentlatch" section, "Pentlatch materials" (item S2j.3) contains 1 page of miscellaneous Island Comox sentences. In the "Salish" section, "Comparative vocabularies of eight Salishan languages" (S.1) includes Comox vocabulary derived from fieldwork and compared with other Salish languages. Finally, in the "Kwakiutl" section of the finding aid, "Maps of Vancouver Island and mainland, with Kwakiutl place names" (item W1a.11) includes some maps with Comox place names. "Kwakiutl ethnographic materials" (item 31) includes small amounts of occasional reference to Comox matters pertaining to their relations with the southern Kwakwaka'wakw tribes. Description: The Kathlamet materials in the ACLS collection consist of items in two sections of the finding aid. In the "Chinook" section, Boas' notebooks 1, 2, and 4 of Field notes on Chinookan and Salishan languages and Gitamat, Molala, and Masset" (item Pn4b.5) contain texts, ethnographic information, and grammatical notes. In the same section, Boas' "Miscellaneous notes on Chinookan languages" (item Pn4.1) includes a text in an unidentified language and fragmentary slips of Chinook-Kathlamet comparisons. In the "Kathlamet" section, there is an additional field notebook by Boas (item Pn4a.8), and two large, separate lexicons derived in part from his fieldwork (items Pn4a.2 and Pn4a.3).

Description: The Keresan materials in the ACLS collection consist of two items compiled by Franz Boas, located in the "Keresan" section of the finding aid. The "Keresan word list and linguistic notes" (item Ke1.1) includes Cochiti and Laguna grammatical, linguistic, folkloristic, and ethnographic materials. There is also "Keresan lexical file" (item Ke1.2) likely derived primarily from Cochiti and Laguna fieldwork, though the extent of other languages' information is undetermined.
