Description: The Achumawi materials in the ACLS collection are primarily located in the "Achumawi" section of the finding aid, with some also in the "Atsugewi" section (specifically item H1a.2, "Parallel Achumawi and Atsugewi texts"). They include a word list from the Pit River area; autobiographies of Willard Carmony, an Achumawi speaker, whose stories refers to being sent to Fort Bidwell Indian Boarding School; linguistic analysis of Achumawi's relationship to the Hokan language family; conversational texts in the Achumawi language; free English translations; and grammars. Also included are notes on dialectical differences between Atwamdzini, Hammawi, and Adzumawi.

Description: The Atsugewi materials in the ACLS collection consist of several items found primarily in the "Atsugewi" section of the finding aid. Most are by Jaime de Angulo: "Conversational text in Atsugewi" (item H1b.2), "Mythological text in Atsugewi" (item H1b.3), and "The Atsugewi Language" (item H1b.1, a a manuscript grammar by Jaime de Angulo intended for comparison with the his study of "the Achumawi language," similar also to his grammar of Shasta in item H1c.1), and "Parallel Achumawi and Atsugewi Texts" (item H1a.2, in the Achumawi section). A separate "Parallel Achumawi and Atsugewi Texts" (item H1a.2) by Lucy Shepard Freeland is in the Atsugewi section.

Description: The Maztec materials in the ACLS collection consist of items found in multiple sections of the finding aid. In the "Mazatec" section, "Cuento mazateco, contado por José Rosas" (OtM.1) includes a grammatical sketch and text, "Cuento de venado y de sapos," with free translations and grammatical notes. "Informe de la investigacion Mazateca" (item OtM.2) gives a summary of phonetics; report of field-work plans; outline of ethnographic problems. In the "Mexico" section of the finding aid, McQuown's "Phonemic systems of various Indian languages of Mexico" (item AM3) includes some Mazatec vocabulary, as does "Comparative vocabularies of various Indian languages of Mexico" (item AM5). In the "Zapotec" section, "Estudio gramatical de las lenguas de la familia zapoteca" (item Z.1) includes analysis of Mazatec, proposing its inclusion in the Zapotecan language family. The exact varieties of Mazatec are not identified.

Description: This collection includes manuscript and photocopied material of anthropologist and linguist Lucy S. "Nancy" Freeland, in which she records the stories told to her by Thomas Williams and Lena Cox. Also included are offprints from "The Hudson Review" of translations of these myths by linguist Jaime de Angulo (Freeman's husband). There are also documents prepared by linguist Howard Berman in preparation for the publication of these myths in "Freeland's Central Sierra Miwok Myths" (1982). The various materials are stored in four packets labeled A, B, C, and D, and bound together with string. An extremely useful cover letter in Packet A from Berman to Stephen Catlett of the APS explains the materials (what they are, provenance, who made what notations upon them) and their relationship to Freeland materials already in the APS collections; APS staff have also made relevant notes in pencil to denote where the various materials can be found. Images are primarily of Coyote, the black and white illustrations accompany the text of “Seven Indian Tales” by Jaime de Angulo. Originally printed in the Hudson Review, an offprint of the published work Indian Tales (1952).

Radin's "Mixtec and Chinantec lexicon" (item MiM.2) is based on his own fieldwork and other published work by Belmar. See separate guide entries for the Paul Radin Papers (Mss.497.3.R114), which contain his original fieldwork. There is also an analysis of Mixtec tones and those of other neighboring language families by Jaime de Angulo (item MiM.1), and a Spanish-Mixtec vocabulary assembled by McQuown and Swadesh (item MiM.3). In the “Mexico” section of the finding aid, see “Comparative vocabularies of various Indian languages of Mexico” (item AM5), which includes Mixtec vocabulary, and McQuown's “Phonemic systems of various Indian languages of Mexico” (item AM3), which includes Mixtec information. Jaime de Angulo's "The Patwin language" (item P4b.1-4) consists of analyses phonology and morphology; semasiology (semantically arranged vocabularies), conversation, and autobiography, all relating to the Colusa dialect. Three items by Radin include a Patwin-English dictionary (item P4b.5), a set of ethnographic and folkloristic stories (item P4b.6-7), and a sketch of Patwin grammar (item P4b.8).

Description: The Patwin materials in the Harvey Pitkin Papers include notebooks, notes, vocabularies, slip files, texts, manuscripts and tracings by A.M. Halpern, Paul Radin, A.L. Kroeber, T.T. Waterman, Donald Ultan, and Howard Wilson, along with pencil sketches by Patwin people in Subcollection I, Series I, Series I-A. There are two dictionaries, by Paul Radin and Donald Ultan in Subcollection I, Series I, Series I-B. Series I-C contains linguistic materials collected by Jaime de Angulo, Kroeber, and Waterman. Series I-D contains Pitkin's work with using a krmograph to create phonetic tracings. Subcollection I, Series II-A includes linguistic work done by Elizabeth Bright, Waterman. Subseries 4-C in Subcollection II includes fieldwork done by Pitkin comparing Patin to Wintu and Nomlaki as well as FIeld notes by Morris Swadesh, nineteen unpublished Vocabularies collected by Pitkin, Jaime de Angulo, Mary Haas, Sally McLendon, Mary Bright, Donald Ultan, and Radin. Subseries 5 contains an index to Radin's work on Patwin as well as Pitkin's work on Proto-Wintu and William Bright's worker wtih the speaker Minnie Bill.

There are two extensive sets of texts recorded by Roland Dixon (items H1c.2 and H1c.3), with interlinear translations. Additionally, de Angulo and Freeland's "The Shasta Language" (item H1c.1) consists of a grammar with illustrative text with interlinear and free translations and notes. There two additional brief items (H1c.4 and H1c.5) recorded by de Angulo, the latter identified as "Knomihu".
