Description: Haas' Cherokee file is centered on her fieldwork in Oklahoma with Watt Sam and Nancy Raven, both Natchez speakers who also spoke Cherokee and Creek. Although Creek was the dominant intermediary language between Natchez and English for both of Haas' Natchez consultants, some Cherokee lexica and verb paradigms were recorded in the Natchez notebooks of Series 2. There is also a small amount of Cherokee material in Victor Riste's notebooks in the same Natchez subseries. Series 9 contains lexica, paradigms, phonotactics, and dialectal variation, likely mostly derived from these sources. Besides these, there are some discussions of Cherokee town names and consultants in Series 1, and a few comparisons to Iroquoian and Muskogean languages.

Description: The Chilula materials in the ACLS collection consist of two sets of notebooks located in the "Chilula" section of the finding aid, both recorded by Pliny Goddard. A set of 5 notebooks recorded at Redwood Creek (item Na20g.1) includes lexical items, texts (translated and untranslated) includings one text and narration on geographical features, plus information on material culture. 1 Kato item is included. A separate set of 4 notebooks recorded at Bald Hills (item Na20g.2) includes data on village sites, material culture, an "Indian encounter" near Fort Seward, and texts with interlinear translations. Consultants are not yet identified.

Description: The Ditidaht materials in the ACLS collection are found in the "Nitinat" section of the finding aid. The bulk of the material consists of field notebooks (item W2b.2, "Nitinat field notebooks") recorded by Mary Haas and Morris Swadesh primarily from Chief Peter (Batlisqawa) and his son Jasper of Port Renfrew in 1931. The notebooks include numerous texts of traditional stories, histories, autobiographical stories, and other content including place names, vocabularies, and grammatical notes. A full table of contents of these notebooks is available. An extensive lexical file of over 6700 terms, derived from these field notebooks, is also found in this collection as item W2b.1, "Nitinat lexical file". Description: The Hupa materials in the ACLS collection consist of a very large amount of linguistic material, located primarily in the "Hupa" section of the finding aid. There are two main sets of material. The earliest materials are two sets notebooks, numbering around 29 notebooks altogether, recorded by Goddard in 1901-1908 (items Na.3 and Na20a.2). These include texts with interlinear translations, historical accounts, vocabulary lists, grammatical notes, and ethnographic notes. Pome, Kato, Wailaki, Sinkyone, Tolowa, and Nongatl. There is also a large body of materials recorded by Sapir in the 1920s (items Na20a.4 and Na20a.5), consisting of 11 notebooks with texts, interlinear translation, and other linguistic notes; a lexical file containing 5000+ word slips, derived from the texts in the field notebooks; and 11 folders of typed-up ethnographic notes on myths, doctors and medicine, birth, puberty, marriage and death, omens, material culture, villages and houses, names, cosmography and geography; warfare. Images include a map of Humboldt County, California and pencil sketches of decorative patterns.

Description: The Inuit materials in the Franz Boas Professional Papers consist of approximately 11 folders, 3 diaries, 2 sketchbooks, and numerous maps and illustrations. Most of this material surrounds Boas' first fieldwork trip of his career to Baffin Island ("Baffinland") in 1883-1884. Under "Boas, Franz," most of this materials are labelled under "Arctic Expedition" or "Baffinland." These include Boas' diaries and sketchbooks, as well as typed translations of them. See also materials listed under "Weike, Wilhelm" for the diary of Boas' assistant during the expedition. The correspondence file for "Comer, George" contains additional information, as may other correspondence files.

Description: The Kwakwaka'wakw materials in the ACLS collection are located predominantly in the "Kwakiutl" section of the finding aid, which contains a full listing of all materials (other relevant sections are "Northwest Coast", "Bella Bella (Heitsuk)", and item AfBnd.4 in "Non-American and non-linguistic material"). Some of the larger individual sets of materials listed within this section also have their own specific tables of contents (available upon request) detailing their often highly diverse contents. Overall, the vast majority of the material is made of of 1) manuscripts sent to Boas by George Hunt from the 1890s to the 1930s, frequently in both Kwak'wala and English, covering a very broad range of Kwakwaka'wakw history, culture, languages, customs, and traditions; and 2) field work materials recorded by Boas and Boas' own analyses of material sent by Hunt, covering a similar range of topics. Additional materials by other individuals focus especially on linguistic and ethnographic matters. Description: Materials relating to Speck's study of Lenape (or "Delaware") history, language, and culture. Speck's correspondence with Delaware collaborators in Oklahoma relating to Lenape history, ethnographic data, linguistics, museum specimens, and reservation affairs, etc., might be of particular interest; there are also several tales related by Witapanóxwe, or War Eagle, other tales and texts (some with interlineal translation) from Josiah Montour and other unknown contributors, and 11 sketches of Lenape art designs. Other correspondence touches on Speck's efforts to collect specimens (and individuals and institutions interested in acquiring them), his efforts to collect paintings and sketches of ceremonies and designs, his fieldwork and expenses, financial support from the University of Pennsylvania and Indiana Historical Society, Shawnee data on Oklahoma Delawares, the Big House Ceremony, efforts to acquire a Delaware Big House to erect in Harrisburg, Delawares-as-women, etc. There are also at least 82 pages (in three folders) of Speck's field notes of ethnographic and linguistic data, and over 50 pages (in two folders) of Speck's miscellaneous notes (including some correspondence) on topics such as Gladys Tantaquidgeon and Lenape designs, botanical specimens, linguistic materials, museum specimens, the Walam Olum, the "Six Nation Delaware reservation", the celestial bear theme, native religion, reviews of Speck's publications, etc. Other notes cover Delaware grammar and vocabulary, Delaware clans and social organization, dualism in Delaware religion, the influence of Christianity on Delaware religion, the provenance of Delaware museum specimens obtained from Delawares in Oklahoma and Canada, biographical information on Joseph Montur and Nicodemus Peters, etc. There are also various drafts, essays, lectures and other writings by Speck on topics such as Delaware religion, ceremonies, peyote rites, designs, population, remnant populations in the east, history, place names, a Delaware bibliography and a notebook of reports to the University of Pennsylvania Research Committee on fieldwork among Oklahoma Delaware, St. Francis Abenaki, Munsee and Six Nations (Haudenosaunee) Delaware, Tutelo, Cayuga, 1931-1936.

Some manuscripts written by Gladys Tantaquidgeon, not about Mohegan matters, have been identified among Speck's notes on the Delaware, Wampanoag, and Innu. There may be other manuscripts in the collection written by hand but not yet identified. In Series III (Photographs), there are about 30 Mohegan-related photographs, some possibly taken by Gladys Tantaquidgeon. In Series IV (Lantern slides), there are 9 images, some of which may be duplicate images of those among the general photos. Lastly, Series V (Maps) contains a small number of maps of Mohegan lands.

Description: The Nongatl materials in the ACLS collection consist mainly of 23 notebooks (item Na20h.1) in the "Nongatl" section of the finding aid. These were recorded by Goddard at Van Dusen Fork and Mad River from consultants Pete and Mrs. Pete, and include Vocabularies, texts with partial translations, narrative of family migration, Mad River place names, and material on Big Bend and Mad River settlements. In the "Hupa" section of the finding aid, Goddard's "Field notes in California Athabascan languages" (item Na.2) also include some Nongatl texts and ethnographic information.
