Description: The Mohegan materials in Series V of the A. Irving Hallowell Papers are composed of stories in Mohegan translated into English, brief grammatical notes, two pages of vocabulary, and 2 maps of Native American tribes in Connecticut. See folder in Series V labelled "Mohegan Vocabulary and Text; Falls River Indian Reservation; Iroquois; Other Ethnology Notes." In the folder labled "American Indian #4" in Box 24, Series V, there is an image of Gladys and Harold Tantaquidgeon. In Series VI, Subseries D, there are about 26 photographs identified as Mohegan-related. In Series I, a correspondence folder labelled "Tantaquidgeon, Harold & Gladys," contains a brochure for the Tantaquidgeon Museum from 1971.

Some manuscripts written by Gladys Tantaquidgeon, not about Mohegan matters, have been identified among Speck's notes on the Delaware, Wampanoag, and Innu. There may be other manuscripts in the collection written by hand but not yet identified. In Series III (Photographs), there are about 30 Mohegan-related photographs, some possibly taken by Gladys Tantaquidgeon. In Series IV (Lantern slides), there are 9 images, some of which may be duplicate images of those among the general photos. Lastly, Series V (Maps) contains a small number of maps of Mohegan lands.

Includes an essay on Speck's visit to an excavation site at Fort Hill, Pennsylvania in July 1903 in which he identifies the site as Shawnee; a letter from Carl Voegelin and Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin transmitting lists of Shawnee dances to Speck; a letter from Wheeler-Voegelin concerning field data on Shawnee use of false faces; an undated report by Wheeler-Voegelin on general burial traits, including a brief account of field experiences and an 8-page outline of burial, funerary, and condolence procedure; a letter from Gladys Tantaquidgeon concerning Shawnee legends, asking about silk applique techniques, and enclosing news clippings; and 16 pages of Speck's miscellaneous Shawnee notes and correspondence, including two letters from Earl L. Description: Materials relating to Speck's study of the peoples now often known collectively as Wampanoag, but who once comprised several tribal entities living in eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including Cape Cod (the Nauset) and islands such as Martha's Vineyard (the Aquinnah or Gay Head Indians). In Subcollection I, Series I, see item II(4B9c), "Mistassini Band -- c. Field Notes," which contains notes, some by Gladys Tantaquidgeon concerning "Gay Head Indians." In this same series, see item III(14D11) "Wampanoag miscellaneous notes," which includes one postal card from Uncle Al to Speck, concerning an island; a letter from Rachelle T. Ryan to Speck reserving a cottage at Gay Head; Frederick S. Hammett (Wistar Institute) to Speck concerning his archaeological find at North Truro, Massachusetts; and a four-page letter from Chief Leroy C. Perry (Ousamequin or Yellow Feather, Wampanoag) concerning tribal and intertribal social activities.
