Description: The Cayuga materials in the Lounsbury Papers are located primarily in the "Cayuga" section of Series II, which contains extensive field notes and transcriptions made by both Lounsbury and Michael Foster of Cayuga stories and speeches given by Alexander General, Howard Skye, and Mrs. George Green, along with related discussions. Description: A work intended as a sequel to Barbeau (1953) Haida myths. In addition to discussing Skidegate and Masset carvers and their work, the author presents material on carvers as medicine men, material on shamanism and witchcraft, classification of the subjects of statuettes (chiefs and illustration of myths). An appendix includes myths recorded by William Beynon among the Skidegate, Tsimshian, and Nisga'a, from 1952-1954.

Description: The Haudenosaunee materials in the Hallowell papers are located in Series V. There are postcards of museum exhibits featuring Iroquois culture in the "American Indian" series of folders. The rest of the materials are concentrated in the folder labled "Eastern Woodlands." These items include information on material culture, the social organization of the confederacy, a chart of relational systems of clans, kinship, and genealogy. Specific topics includ Huron Mythology, Oneida magic, Seneca secret societies and genealogy. Some of this material is culturally sensitive and may be restricted.

Description: The Haudenosaunee materials in the Lounsbury Papers are vast in scope ranging from ceremonial recordings in Series VII to secondary sources in Series II to Lounsbury's own linguistic work among the Haudenosaunee (see notes on Mohawk, Cayuga, Seneca, Oneida, and Onondaga materials). Description: This collection contains the bulk of correspondence between Franz Boas and his professional colleagues, though there are also other Boas collections in the library. The correspondents listed above contain some correspondence related to the culture or language listed in this entry. The largest correspondence is that of George Hunt, which took place from 1894-1933 and runs around 1000 pages. A full index for this correspondence is available upon request, and includes cross references to the locations (in other APS collections) of fieldwork and other materials referred to in the letters. Other correspondences primarily about Kwakwaka'wakw matters are that of the Cadwalladers, Dan Cranmer, John Fillmore (concerning the transcription of Boas' cylinder recordings of Kwakiutl songs), Alfred I. Hall, and C. J. Nowell. In the finding aid listings for some of these correspondents, the individual letters pertaining to this culture or language will be identified by a subject heading, though for some correspondents this indexing has not yet been completed. Some letters may contain only brief mentions of work being conducted in relation to the topic. Description: The Mohawk material in the ACLS collection consist of 3 items in 3 different sections of the finding aid. In the "Mohawk" section, Barbeau's "Mohawk and Cayuga grammatical material recorded... at Six Nations Reserve" (item I1a.1) includes analysis, from Mohawk materials, of the Indian vocabularies appended to the account of Jacques Cartier's first and second voyages. In the "Algonkian" section, Sapir's "Notes on Seneca, Mohawk, Delaware, Tutelo, Abenaki, Malecite, Micmac, Montagnais, and Cree [and Algonquian]" (item I1.2) includes vocabulary and texts from Kahnawake and Grand River. In the "Iroquois" section, "Material on Iroquois dialects" (item I1.3) includes biographical and some linguistic information on Mohawk, conducted as part of a broader comparative study of Iroquoian languages, for which accompanying audio materials can be found in the collection "Material on Iroquois Dialects and Languages" (Mss.Rec.13).

Description: The Mohawk materials in the Lounsbury Papers are primarily found in the "Mohawk" section of Series II: Research Subject. This section contains materials Lounsbury recorded directly with Mohawk speakers from Kahnawake such as Minnie Diabo and Louise Diabo, who Lounsbury appears to have first met via the Mohawk community in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. The section also contains notes by Gordon Day, Marius Barbeau, J.N.B. Hewitt, and others. There are also notes for a Mohawk dictionary collected by Gunther Michelson between 1961-1994. The recordings in Series VII include a series entitled "The Mohawks Learn Mohawk," of Lounsbury talking with students in a classroom setting. There are also recordings of Lounsbury teaching at Yale with the Mohawk speaker Minnie Diabo

Description: The Onondaga materials in the Lounsbury collection include a French-Onondaga from 1860 in Series II. There are numerous audio recordings including that of a Condolence Ceremony and the Feast of the White Dog (Guy-wee-oo) in Series VII. (These recordings are restricted due to cultural sensitivity.) The correspondence, in Series I, includes Harold Blau's mention of a recording in Onondaga of part of Handsome Lake's code, William Fenton's work with Howard Sky on the Goldenweiser version of the Great Law of Peace in Onondaga, Michael Foster's description of collecting versions of the Thanksgiving Address in Onondaga, Cara Richards on Onondaga recordings.
